Are you looking to upgrade your bathroom and turn it into the place where you brush your teeth to a room where you can fully unwind and relax? We often overlook our bathrooms when it comes to creating relaxing and mindful spaces around the home, but, with a little bit of renovation, we can make it one of our favourite rooms in the house.
Whether you want to upgrade a family bathroom or add a little bit of luxury to your en suite, read on to discover some top tips on how to create your dream bathroom.
Add a range of lighting
One of the first things you can do to upgrade every bathroom is to add a range of lighting. Although a bright bulb may be great for waking you up first thing in the morning, adding some more subtle lighting that you can use can mean that, in the evenings when you are looking to unwind after a long day, you’ll be able to create a more relaxing mood.
Trying utilising strip lighting around the back of mirrors and storage for a subtle look, a warming lamp next to the tub that you can read by or, for something a bit more off-grid you could even make sure to plan in spaces for candles in your design.
Utilise hidden storage options
From toilet roll to shampoo bottles, there is a lot that lives in our bathrooms and although having a little bit of it on show is fine, having a lot can cause the room to look quite cluttered. This is where utilising some hidden storage options can really come in handy, which let you keep everything at an arm’s length but tucked away from sight.
Rhiannan from Mummy of Four has recently gone through her own home renovation and she told us: “My top tip to consider when renovating your bathroom is to think about storage. While it might be tempting to think only about design and space, without adequate storage for toiletries and other essentials, your bathroom will forever look cluttered. Is clutter luxurious? No, it most definitely is not.”
Bring in cosy elements
It’s not just practicality you should think of though, you need to make the room a space where you want to unwind and relax. It should be somewhere you feel comfortable, somewhere that makes you feel as though you can shut the rest of the world out if you need to. Yes, trying to keep clutter to a minimum is a good way to do this, but make sure you aren’t also stripping out things that ease your soul.
Steph from Renovation Bay-Bee explained: “When renovating a bathroom, don’t think completely practically. Make sure you add in some houseplants that love being in the bathroom and consider adding artwork to the walls. These both soften the room and make it more luxurious.”

Keep it easy to clean
Cleaning the bathroom is a chore that can be made a lot easier and less time consuming with some pre-planning during the renovation stage. Making sure you have a nice clean space is imperative for relaxation, but with a room that is cluttered and has hard-to-reach areas and rough textures, it can be hard to feel as though it’s properly clean.
This is why, whilst planning, you should make sure to take cleaning into consideration. This can mean making sure you have mainly flat and empty surfaces, using that hidden storage we suggested to keep the dust away from areas filled with items and trying to make sure everything is within arm’s reach. It will also mean you don’t need to move much around to get everything properly cleaned.
Consider a double sink
A double sink is a special luxury that people often only experience in upmarket hotels, however, why not bring that luxury into your home with your very own double sink? Especially perfect for shared bathrooms, no more fighting for mirror space in the corner or having to tackle a sink full of someone else’s products. Installing a double sink can make a big difference to your day-to-day life and is sure to impress anyone else who sees it as well.
Upgrade your bath or shower
Whether you are a bath person or a shower person, the time you spend cleaning yourself should be a time where you can relax, unwind and just spend time focusing on yourself. By upgrading your bath or shower, you’ll be able to reach new levels of relaxation.
For those who struggle with their mobility and perhaps use a wheelchair lift, there are some wonderful and accessible bath and shower options out there which include easy entry and exit and can help make the time you spend on self-care both independent and enjoyable.
