Experts Say That Future Homes Should be Made Wheelchair Accessible

2019-10-08

Latest figures show that the number of new build properties in the UK has hit an 11-year high. As of June 2019, more than 170,000 new homes had been built during a 12-month period. As these numbers continue to rise, so does the number of people in need of accessible housing. Experts say that future homes being built need to be designed to be wheelchair accessible.

7 Out of 10 Homes Are Not Fully Accessible

A recent study found that the majority of people in Britain are not able to welcome a wheelchair user into their home without a struggle. This comes down to having poor entry access and no way for the guest to move freely around the floors. On average, 7 out of 10 people questioned have said that it would not be possible for wheelchair users to access all areas of their home. One of the main things that properties fall short on is the toilets, with just over 60% of people saying that they only have one bathroom upstairs which those who are less able would struggle to access.

Earlier in the year, it was announced that higher accessibility standards for new housing were to be put in place by the UK government. Ex Prime Minister Theresa May made plans to launch a scheme that would ensure all new homes were accessible for disabled people. This came following the recognition that too many disabled people are living in unsuitable homes.

Making A Home Accessible

Home lifts are on the rise, with the market showing positive signs for the future. Not only are they highly functional pieces of equipment, but they are designed in a way to help increase the aesthetic appeal of a property. The desire to make a home more accessible to residents and visitors is often a clear motivator of opting for a home lift. Architects and designers are choosing to install them into newly built properties while those who are renovating their home are looking for a way to include a lift in their plans.

Benefits of a Home Lift

Four in 10 people face accessibility issues on a daily basis outside of their property – so it’s important that the place they call home is somewhere where they can be free, independent and comfortable. There are a whole host of reasons as to why your home can benefit from having a home lift installed.

Be More Independent

Everyone wants to feel like their house is a home. If you’re not able to move freely because of access issues, you may begin to feel trapped within the four walls of your property. A platform lift is a great way to upgrade your property, allowing yourself and your guests to move between the different levels.

Thinking About the Future

Although you may not be struggling right now, you never know what the future holds. Home lifts are a great way to help property owners stay in their own house for as long as possible as you won’t have to look elsewhere if you do begin to face accessibility issues in a few years. What you’ll be doing is future-proofing your property. Discover more about making your home more wheelchair accessible and planning for the future in this blog post.

Smart and Convenient

Home lifts aren’t just for people who are less able. Imagine how much easier large or heavy items will be to take upstairs if you don’t have to carry them all the way. Bulky items such as prams, luggage or laundry can be a breeze now that you have a lift installed in your home and don’t have to tackle the stairs. The smart concept of a home lift allows everyone to live independently without having to rely on others.
